Robotic Surgery Q & A
What Is the da Vinci Robotic® Surgery System?
Robotic surgery is an extension of laparoscopic surgery that uses the precise movements of robotic arms to perform delicate surgeries within the body. As with laparoscopic surgeries, the arms of the robot are inserted into the abdominal cavity. The arms are controlled by a surgeon at a console. The console provides both 3D and high-definition visualization, which allow the doctor to see inside the body to guide the surgery without having to open the patient’s body. The robotic instruments are wristed, which increases their range of motion, making sewing and working in narrow spaces much easier and efficient. Conventional laparoscopic instruments are not wristed. An assistant surgeon is at the patient’s bedside to aid the console surgeon.
Dr. Hoeltgen and Dr. Wool have extensive training and experience with the da Vinci Surgical System. Both doctors have been proctors training other doctors to use the technology.

What Are the Benefits of Robotic Surgery?
Many of the benefits of robotic surgery for patients are the same as the benefits associated with laparoscopic surgeries: less trauma to the body, quicker recovery times with less pain, and less scarring. In addition, robotic surgeries offer greater precision in the delivery of the procedure itself. It offers the surgeon better visualization of the surgical field inside the body, corrections for hand movements, and greater maneuverability of the instruments. Ultimately, robotic surgeries provide a higher quality experience for the patient with less risk of infection or complications and an easier recovery.
