With the ReShape procedure, two connected balloons filled with saline (salt water) are placed temporarily inside your stomach via endoscopy in an outpatient medical setting. The non-invasive weight loss procedure lasts about 20 minutes while you are comfortably sedated under light anesthesia. The balloons remain in the stomach for six months, helping you lose weight and encouraging healthy eating habits by taking up room in your stomach. You can still eat the healthy foods you enjoy, but the balloons act as built-in portion control, helping you feel full and less hungry.

ReShape vs. Orbera gastric balloon procedure

We believe the ReShape procedure balloon may be superior to its current competitor on the market, the Orbera intragastric balloon. First, the ReShape dual balloon has a higher fill volume so it will occupy more space in your stomach, compared with the Orbera, to help you feel full. Second, we believe the shape of the ReShape balloon is more anatomic and will lead to a lower incidence of unpleasant side effects while the balloon is in place. Last and probably most importantly, there were no reported migrations of the ReShape balloon in the initial U.S. trial.  A 1.4% migration rate out of the stomach has been reported for the Orbera balloon. A migration of the balloon out of the stomach could potentially result in an intestinal obstruction. The Reshape dual balloon design may contribute to its 0% migration rate as two balloons would likely need to rupture for migration to occur. Another safety feature of the ReShape balloon is that it is filled with methylene blue and saline. You will know if a balloon ruptures because your urine will change color, and you can notify your surgeon.
